The cost of the certification course is $2,850, which includes books & supplies. A registration fee of $500 is required, with a balance due of $2,350 on January 15th.

Financial Planning Assistant - Course Syllabus

Week 1 - Overview of Financial Planning profession, the role of the Planning Assistant as a career path and professional ethics. Includes a lab session to introduce the class “client”.

Week 2 - Financial Statements, net worth, assets, liabilities and cash flow of income and expenses. Lab explores the “client’s” net worth and cash flow data.

Week 3 - Investment concepts and risks, plus personality risk profilers. Lab review of our “client’s” psychological profile. Each student will get their own profile analyzed.

Week 4 - Discussion of common investment types, cost basis and capital gains. Lab review of “client’s” investment portfolio of stocks, bond and mutual funds.

Week 5 - Discussion of tax planning, especially income tax. We’ll look at key lines of a 1040 tax return, schedules and W-2/1099 forms. The lab will view the “client’s” sample tax return.

Week 6 - Discussion of retirement planning tools, such as the IRA, 401(k), Roth IRA, and annuities. Lab includes “client’s” actual retirement assets and observations

Week 7 - Risk management will be discussed as a transfer process to insurance companies for auto, home, disability, long-term care and liability. The class “client’s” data in these areas will form the lab exercise.

Week 8 - The major risk-management areas of life insurance and health will command special attention. The lab will use actual “client” sample data.

Week 9 - Typical estate planning documents will be made familiar: wills, trusts and powers of attorney. The lab will look at one “client’s” use of various estate planning tools.

Week 10 - The class “client” will come to life through the completed financial plan that incorporates the data of the previous weeks.
